PIVOT Preludes

Sarah presents three “Preludes” before performances of the Catalyst Quartet. Each 45-minute Prelude focuses on three composers from the Quartet’s program that night, with spoken commentary and performances at the piano. Featured composers include Amy Beach, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Teresa Carreño, Antonio Carlos Gomes, Germaine Tailleferre, Fanny Mendelssohn, Miguel Bernal, and others. Sarah also hosts post-concert talks with the Catalyst Quartet after each performance.

premiere of Viet Cuong's Stargazer

Sarah is soloist with the California Symphony for the premiere of Viet Cuong’s Stargazer, a beautiful new piano concerto, conducted by Donata Cabrera. Viet Cuong has been composer in residence with the orchestra for the 2020-2023 seasons. About the name Stargazer: “I like the idea that the pianist is the Stargazer, with the piano as your telescope. You’re looking out and hearing the orchestra twinkle around you and they’re taking the sounds from you. Each one of the notes echoes itself, so it snowballs and creates this very lustrous texture.”

Flower Piano, for which twelve pianos are positioned around the Botanical Gardens, is very popular, so allow plenty of time for parking!
