George Lewis wrote this piece (this is one movement of it) for Frederic Rzewski, who played it in Brussels but never yet in the United States.  It’s inspired by stride pianists like James P. Johnson and Willie “The Lion” Smith.  I’m grateful to George for educating me on the rhythmic complexities of these virtuosos and the dominance of the left hand.   This was recorded at UC San Diego, with George doing some amazing dances to get me into the groove of his music.
