Pianist Sarah Cahill will perform on the final day of Grand Piano Weekend, the three-day season finale of the second annual Sri Moonshine Music Series, curated by composer Terry Riley on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 3pm at the Camptonville Performing Arts Center (15333 Cleveland Ave).

Cahill will perform works by Riley including Fandango on the Heaven Ladder, Be Kind to One Another, Venus in 94, and Keyboard Studies along with several works by Francois Couperin and Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin.

Additionally, Cahill will release her next album, Eighty Trips Around the Sun: Music by and for Terry Riley, a box set tribute to Terry Riley on Irritable Hedgehog Records on September 29, 2017. The four-CD set includes solo works by Riley, including the first commercial recording of Two Pieces (1958-9); four-hand works (with Regina Myers) by Riley, commissioned by Cahill; and nine new works composed in honor of Riley’s 80th birthday by Samuel Adams, Danny Clay, Evan Ziporyn, Christine Southworth, Dylan Mattingly, Gyan Riley, Elena Ruehr, Keeril Makan, and Pauline Oliveros (a four-hand structured improvisation, with Samuel Adams).

Eighty Trips Around the Sun (the title was Riley’s own suggestion) encompasses a kaleidoscopic spectrum of Terry Riley’s cross-genre compositions at the piano, spanning more than half a century. Cahill says, “While Terry Riley is known for ensemble pieces like In C, which launched the minimalist movement, and his collaborations with the Kronos Quartet and other ensembles, his primary medium is the piano. He himself is a brilliant virtuoso pianist, and while he was classically trained, his extended piano improvisations and notated works reflect his background in North Indian raga, honky-tonk piano, jazz, minimalism, blues, and more.”

Cahill has worked with Riley since 1996 when she commissioned the first of his four-hand pieces, Cinco de Mayo, for a festival celebrating the 100th birthday of Henry Cowell at Cal Performances in 1997.  She wrote the performer notes for his collected piano works, published by Chester/Schirmer, and has interviewed him several times on the radio, including a joint interview and performance with Riley and John Cale (from the Velvet Underground). Cahill toured with “Terry Riley and Friends” in the Triptych Festival to Edinburgh and Glasgow in 2007, and performed at a 70th birthday celebration at Royce Hall in Los Angeles with Acid Mothers Temple, Matmos, and other performers. In Cahill’s class on 20th Century Keyboard Literature at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Riley visited the class and improvised four-hands with each of the students.
